Drawing & Painting II students are working with systems. They began by looking at the art work of Lee Walton and Laurie Frick. Both artists use data of some sort as the inspiration of for their art. Students created a system using the roll of a dice. The number rolled determines the action. Working in small groups students first worked with a system I developed. The next day they created their own systems. What I really love about this lesson is how they are "thinking" about their work. Since the image is not representational they are working in the most basic form of mark making. They could choose any supplies and types of marks they wanted. They had to work cooperatively to design, execute and display their final works.
"The arts celebrate multiple perspectives. One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world."
